Past Simple       V2(ed)/did ...VI 

yesterday, last week, a year ago, never, the other day

Употребляется:

1.последовательные действия в пошлом: 

Тот came home. He took out a key and opened the door. When he entered the room the telephone rang.

2.действия, не связан­ные с настоящим, за­кончившиеся в прош­лом, с указанием точ­ного времени:

They visited their uncle last week.

Past Continuous    was/were-Ving 

yesterday at 5 o’clock, from 6 till 7, the whole day, all day long, 

when he V2 while he was Ving

1. действие в процессе, происходившее в опре­деленный момент 

в прошлом:

I was writing a letter at 5 o'clock yesterday.

2. прошедшее действие в процессе, прерывае­мое другим, одномоментным действием: 

The hoy was watching TV when the telephone rang.

3. два и больше одновре­менных действия в про­цессе:

The girl was reading a book while, her sister was watching TV.

Past Perfect  had V3(ed)

by that time, by 2 o’clock yesterday, before lie came, after

1. прошедшее действие, происшедшее до како­го-то момента:

They had. finished dinner by 5 o’clock yesterday.

2. прошедшее действие, происшедшее до дру­гого действия:

They had finished dinner before. I came yesterday.

Past Perfect Continuous  had been Ving 

for 2 hours when he came, how long? since when?

Употребление

действие, длившееся до какого-то момента (другого действия) 

в прошлом в течение определенного периода 

When I came last Saturday she had been working in the garden for 2 hours.
